OrcsThe creatures called Orcs are a savage race. With their coarse features, rugged physique, horny nails and gnarly teeth they are good for one thing only and that is War. An art which they practice constantly. Fortunately for civilisation, Orcs mainly war amongst themselves or the Barbarian peoples. All Orcs are warriors at heart, even their females and brats fight amongst themselves. Their harsh upbringing gives them few opportunities to develop the higher arts. Their ways are often direct and unsubtle, they can be ruthless in pursuit of a goal and will use any means to hand. They prize strength, boldness and cunning, they despise weakness and fear. Skill at arms is appreciated and they will honour the most powerful of their enemies. A strong Orc will make all lesser creatures his slaves, but is himself slave to a stronger master. It would be a grave mistake to assume stupidity in an orc, they have a sensory acuity that makes up for their lack of craft.
Orcs are given to extremes of mood, they can fly into a killing rage of destruction at the slightest provocation, or laugh themselves silly at the crudest of humour. They are gluttons, frequently eating, drinking and despoiling themselves into insensibility. Often in victory they destroy the very thing they fought for. In defeat they are desolate and will seek their death. Beauty as we know it has little worth to them, though they value a good weapon or trusty beast. Generally they have little aptitude for magic themselves, but they are wary of it and hold seers and prophets in high regard. Their few tribal shamans often achieve high position through supporting a great leader. The Orcs were once wide spread in the Land, living in a multitude of tribes, clans and war bands all preying on their neighbours. The arrival of the City Builders and the rise of civilisation in the Land, drove most Orcs into the Wilderness where they trouble no-one but themselves. Their main strongholds are in the mountainous regions of the north and west. Clans of Orcs may be found in all parts of the Land except possibly the Eastern Empire where the Toltacs have endeavoured to destroy all that are unlike themselves. They haunt the marshes of the great rivers, the open grassland of the central plains, the hills of the north, the forests of the South and East, even the craggy coast of the great sea where a few bands have taken to wrecking and sea roving. In their home lands the Orcs live by war, hunting and gathering. They have not the patience or foresight for agriculture. Lately some Orcs have taken to trade and shown an unsettling capability for it as few people will risk cheating an Orc and get away with it. They bring pelts and wild game to market as well as gems, metal ore and the loot of their rampages. They take wine, weapons, gaudy cloth and gold. They will take slaves of other races, but they are not known to trade them. Occasionally they have been known to ransom hostages back to their people. Recently a few more enlightened Orcs have found a useful role in the cities where their brute strength can be put to labouring for those masters bold enough and strong enough to take them on. But as the saying goes, "a live Orc is more trouble than he is worth, and a dead Orc is worth nothing."
