Elves and Half Elves

The true Elves have not been seen in the Land for many years, though their offspring remain among us. They were or still are an enigmatic race inspiring curiosity, envy, devotion, awe, dread and loathing. They populate the culture and myths of all races in the Land. They have influenced great moments in history, played the role of heroes and villains and inflicted petty spite on lonely travellers. Many of the most notable houses claim a line of descent that includes some elven blood.

The Elves of myth dwelt in a golden age of wonders. The elvish Lords and Ladies walked with the young gods of man. Their magic surpassed any we know today, such artifacts they created have passed into legend. They were fierce and prideful warriors treating war as sport and death as a jest. Even the lowliest of them could pass themselves as a king or queen among men such was their glory. They were lordly and arrogant in their pride. Mortality held no meaning for them and mortal creatures were seen as ephemeral. Of no great import, much as we have little regard for the life of a hen or a fly.

The true Elves live outside of time as we mortals know it. Their homes are said to exist in a perpetual twilight. Visitors to their realm may find that years may have passed by in the mundane world while a few days were spent with their hosts. An Elf might journey in our mortal world meeting people and visiting places, then return days later (to him) only to find everything he once knew changed beyond recognition. And what man would choose an enemy that never forgets, does not know of forgiveness and will revenge himself on your grand children?

It is a common belief that all Elves are wizards, this is not so but most elves know some magic. Magic is their life blood. This may be part of the reason they are seen so infrequently now. The cities grow and more of the wild lands are settled by man. Few magical creatures can thrive long in a city, with our conflicting beliefs, constant change and mundane concerns. Those men that live closest to the wild lands arm themselves against superstition with iron, amulets and minor magics. These pose a real threat to creatures that live by magic. The magical creatures find it harder to sustain themselves.

Still their offspring live mortal lives among us. Despite the Elves unconcern with mankind in general there have always been those individuals who have attracted Elvish attention if only for a short span. Such liasions frequently produce children of mixed race or mysterious origin. These 'Elf Children' are initially of human appearance (few others survive) and inspire great affection in their mortal families.
Their tragedy is that as they mature, they become 'touched' with strangeness, they find themselves asking un-answerable questions. Many become out-caste seeking a home they have never known. Often their elvish heritage manifests itself in unusual talents or abilities, also it may be passed on to their children.

The Elves are long gone, but few folk believe them truly gone, they may yet return.
